Information webinar – Cognition and my MS

Like other symptoms of MS, cognitive symptoms vary greatly from person to person. The MS Society will be running a webinar tore

It will take place online on Thursday 16 September at 7pm.

Not everyone who has MS will experience problems with memory and thinking, but mild difficulties are common. Cognition refers to memory and thinking. Cognitive skills vary naturally in different people – we all have different strengths and weaknesses. Our cognitive powers are considered to be normal if our skills allow us to cope adequately with everyday life.

With the help of Professor Jonathan Evans from the Institute of Health and Wellbeing at Glasgow University, the MS Society will explore how our cognitive powers might be affected by MS and how we can harness them for our benefit.

Jon has conducted and published extensive research into the relationship between cognitive impairments and physiological change. He will also be joined by a panel of volunteer experts who will share their own experience of managing their MS.

You can ask any questions you have about cognition and MS at the event or, if you prefer, you can submit a question beforehand when you register for a place.

MS-UK Information Session – stay motivated

Our friends at MS-UK are offering an information session about ‘Staying on track – how to set goals and keep motivated’ on Monday 20 September at 2pm.

During the information session ‘Staying on track’, Dr Gretchen Hawley will be talking about how to identify specific exercise goals, stay consistent and measure success along the way.

Dr Hawley will break these down into six tips that will help people get back on track and stay motivated with their exercise routines. The six tips are:

1. Pick one thing and start small

2. Pick a time that works for you

3. Think positive thoughts before, during, and after

4. Create your “why”

5. Remind yourself of your “proof”

6. Surround yourself with positive success stories and personal development

At the end of the session, there will be twenty minutes for questions and answers.

If you can’t make the session live, don’t worry it will be recorded and made available to watch again for all those registering in advance.

MS-UK have a suggested donation is £5 for this information session, but you can make a donation of your choosing from £1 to attend.

If you would like to know more about this session or would like help in registering, please email register@ms-uk.org.

Oxygen tank update

We are now fully operational and running at full capacity, ie, 6 people, in the chamber.

BOOKING and CANCELLATION POLICY

Because the office is not manned every day, please DO NOT cancel your appointments by email, please leave a message on the answerphone.  Please also book appointments by telephone.

BOOKINGS

Membership needs to be paid BEFORE and therapies are taken, payment details are on the membership form.

The diary is open for bookings as follows:

MS members– 6 weeks, All other members – 3 weeks

PRIORITY WILL BE GIVEN TO MS PATIENTS – you may be asked to change your appointment to accommodate an MS member.

It is understood that some sessions have limited availability, please share.  If a favoured time is required by more than one person, please alternate your bookings to give each other the benefit.  Similarly, double sessions may be reduced to a single to accommodate more peoples’ needs.

CANCELLATIONS

Appointments (including oxygen) cancelled within 24hrs will incur full donation as all therapists will still expect payment.  Appointments made for a Monday, please try and cancel the Friday before, it is too late to rearrange appointments for the therapist.

NB: volunteers for oxygen sessions have to be organised and notified well in advance of the session.  Because we are carrying out far more oxygen sessions is has become an increasingly time consuming task to rearrange sessions and people.

Obviously donations for missed appointments will be discretionary as to individual circumstances.

Government advice changes – what does it mean for people with MS?

Last Monday the Government relaxed some of the coronavirus restrictions in what some have dubbed ‘Freedom Day’. But what does that mean for people with MS?

“Wear a mask – don’t wear a mask”
“Keep two metres from others – social distancing no longer applies”
“It’s freedom day – proceed with caution.”

If you’re feeling confused by what the easing of restrictions now mean for you, then you’re not alone. The MS Trust has updated their guidance on coronavirus and Multiple Sclerosis to help make sense of it all.

Read it here: https://mstrust.org.uk/a-z/coronavirus-covid-19-and-multiple-sclerosis

If you are feeling anxious or worried, our counselling service is available – call us on 0118 901 6000 or email ms@bmstc.org to make an appointment.
