Carers Oxfordshire Monthly Update – May 2016
Spring has arrived at last and I am delighted to be able to update you on the latest news from Carers Oxfordshire. The new edition of ‘Care Matters’ is attached both in pdf form and as an electronic link http://ow.ly/4nbLQI and as always it is full of information, advice and support for carers. Inside this edition is a pull out section highlighting some of the many free events and activities available to carers throughout National Carers Week which this year occurs 6th-12th June. The list was accurate and up to date at the time of going to press but we are adding more each day so be sure to check out our website for those added more recently www.carersoxfordshire.org.uk.
The highlight of the week is the ‘Big Event’ on Thursday 9th June which is being opened by The High Sheriff of Oxfordshire’, Sarah Taylor. I have attached a poster with more details of the event and if you would like to have a free stand at the venue do please contact me to book a place.
If you would like to help us support carers during Carers Week by holding an event or awareness raising day please do not hesitate to contact me or my colleague Traceydesmond@carersoxfordshire.org.uk to discuss further.
Finally, one last appeal to you to help in Carers Week with our fundraising campaign. All money raised will be used to directly help carers, many of who struggle to have a life of their own due to their caring responsibilities. Could you hold a fundraising event at you place of work or in your team during Carers Week? Could you wear yellow to ‘shine a light’ on carers and donate £2? Or maybe not wear yellow (it is not my favourite colour for sure!) and donate £5 or more?! I have attached a poster you could display in your workplace and which you can adapt to suit your circumstances or you could just help by sending a small personal donation. It is easy to donate, either by sending a text message to 70070, quoting OXON66 and the amount you would like to donate, or by sending a cheque made out to Action for Carers (Oxfordshire) to the address below.
It is a sobering thought that 45% of carers give up work due to their caring role, and half of all carers are likely to suffer ill health than non carers.
Thank you so much for your help which is invaluable to us as we seek to create and develop new services to support carers who provide so many hours of dedicated care to their loved ones every day.

Great North Swim – Please sponsor!
A friend of mine who’s mum recently passed away is doing a fundraising event for the centre. Her mum Yvonne Pow came to the Centre many years ago. Her fundraising page is:

Theresa is going to take part in the Great North Swim on 11th June 2016, she will be swimming 1 mile in Lake Windermere. She has been training for this event for the past couple of months, swimming up and down the pool at the Didcot Wave 4 times a week. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor her and donations will be quickly processed and passed to MS Therapy Centre Oxfordshire.
Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity’s behalf where the donor is eligible for this.
Please support her and the Centre.

A new scientific consensus has been reached that changes the way relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) should be treated.
The evidence now tells us that, rather than waiting to see whether more relapses occur, disease modifying therapies (DMTs) should be offered as close as possible to diagnosis. Read on.
It’s MS Awareness Week 2016!
As part of our work to raise awareness about MS, we’ve created a brief online survey to find out how aware people are of MS and its impact. We’d appreciate it if you could send the link to all your members, post on social media pages and websites, and ask others to do the same. We’d like to have as many responses as possible, from a wide demographic, so the MSNTC trustees will be sending to family and friends and we’d encourage you all to do the same.
The survey only takes a couple of minutes so please, share share share! We’ve provided some suggested text for social media but please feel free to adjust as necessary for you/your centre, and of course when individuals are posting this on social media they can tailor it for friends and family.
Here’s the link to the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/X9J5CSM
