A stem cell treatment can halt symptoms of ms in sufferers.  Chemotherapy was used to destroy the immune system of 24 MS patients.  Doctors ‘reset’ them using the cells from bone marrow.  It stopped relapses and development of new brain lesions in 23 of the patients for a prolonged period without medication.  Eight patients had a sustained improvement in their condition more than seven years after treatment in Ottawa, Canada.  However one patient died from complications, it was reported in the Lancet. More than 100,000 people have MS in the UK.  Dr Emma Gray, of the MS Society said “This treatment does offer hope, but it’s also an aggressive procedure with substantial risks”.
